Artificial Intelligence isn’t the Problem. Education Is.
Why do schools find it so difficult to change?
Last week, I wrote my 500th Medium story.
It felt like a perfect time to go back and read some of my old stories. I usually avoid this. Old writing is like opening an attic box and discovering clothes you once considered fashionable, only to wonder how you ever had the courage to wear them.
Looking back is a recipe for guaranteed disappointment and embarrassment.
Nevertheless, I looked at some of the pieces I had written years ago about education, technology, and artificial intelligence.
One was Education in a Digital Age, published in August 2017. Another was Education is the Key to a Better Future, But… We Must TEACH Them How to LEARN!, published in 2018. I also reread Hello New World of Artificial Intelligence, written at a time when AI still sounded like something that belonged to the imagination of overexcited futurists.
Surprisingly, reading those pieces didn’t feel strange at all.
In fact, they felt more urgent than they did almost ten years ago.
The future I was writing about is no longer waiting somewhere in the distance. It’s here.
