Mirror mirror on the wall, what’s going on with us?
It was like looking into a mirror. And I was not fond of the reflection.
One of my colleagues gave his farewell speech last week. He had been a professor for more than thirty years. A countless number of students followed his classes. So many colleagues and peers had accepted to teach in his international program, which he started without any support when he began his academic journey.
So, I expected a well-attended event and a mixed audience of all ages — current and former colleagues and students who wanted to show appreciation for his contribution to their careers. I remember I had to stand at the last farewell speech I attended five years ago. No seats were available when I arrived at the party — I tend to show up just a few minutes before it starts.
But last week’s experience was completely different. I arrived punctually, as usual, but was overwhelmed by the number of available seats. There were about thirty people in a room that could accommodate more than hundred persons. Most of them were students. A few more decided to follow the event remotely.
