It is a line from “Approachable,” the debut single by the Gurriers, an Irish punk band, ridiculing online media.
My wife and I watched them perform on BBC Two’s “Later… with Jools Holland” last week.
The rawness, the energy, and the disregard for all musical and social conventions reminded us of the punk bands of the late 1970s.
Pure retro-nostalgia — a literal blast from the past.
The phrase — “Damn, I was born in the wrong era” — kept echoing in my mind. I even screamed it several times before we went to bed, using my best raw, John Lydon circa 1976–7 voice.
No doubt it sounded terrible.
