“What’s that around your neck?”

My former student pointed at the badge holder they slapped on me as soon as I entered the building.

I frowned.

Isn’t it obvious? It has my name on it.

Looking down, I read in blazing red letters: “STOP THE BUDGET CUTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION.”

Oh, great. My name was printed — on the back. I flipped it over but then quickly shoved the badge in my pocket.

“Surely you’re against the budget cuts?” my former student asked, brow slightly raised.

Just what I want! Politics. When he should be focusing on his speech.

I’d invited him to give a commencement address to the class of 2024. I was convinced he would inspire them. That was the plan.

“Of course, I hate the budget cuts,” I answered. “Doing more with less? It’s a nightmare.”

“Then why hide it?” he pressed.

Let it go.

Pause. Deep breath. Honest answer.
