Why We All “Freak Out” in the Future (and That’s a Good Thing)

Music, our first love, offers a cure for “hurry sickness.”

This is the story about a music genre that became most popular in the 1970s, suddenly went underground, saw an uplift in 2020, and now gained supremacy on the radio again. The genre is called disco. It’s August 2025. Technology controls our lives.

Le Freak is topping the music charts. It’s funny and ironic. I wasn’t a fan of disco music in the seventies — I was too young to understand the music and the culture behind it back then. But when I hear the song now, I know the lyrics by heart.

“One, two… Ah, freak out! Le freak, c’est chic.”

The lyrics aren’t complicated, but what amazes me is that I can still remember them after almost fifty years without even being a disco fan. The song has either made a secret impression, or I’ve unconsciously heard it so many times during my childhood that it is engraved on my brain. Anyway, the song surely brings back vivid memories. A life of spontaneity and sometimes silliness. The fun we had at home. The typical seventies fashion. Bell bottom jeans. Flannel shirts. Longer hair. Sideburns.

When I hear the song now, I cannot resist turning it louder, stopping whatever I am doing, and starting sort of dancing…
